PAINTING A LANDSCAPE IN ACRYLIC

Discover how to paint a landscape in acrylic and learn to create a glaze using glossy fluid medium in our video tutorial with artist Diane Benoit du Rey.

APPLYING THE GREYS
Mix titanium white and ivory black on the palette to create three shades of grey: light grey, medium grey and dark grey. Apply the light grey with a flat brush to create the mountain’s outline, keeping the white of the canvas for the sky. Then, using a slightly dampened spalter brush, fill in a flat area by applying the colour with a quick gesture. Draw your sketch in charcoal, taking into account the different areas of the image, then apply the medium grey colour, filling in the shapes. Repeat this process by superimposing the dark grey on the darker parts of the image.

DILUTING THE PAINT
Mix the gloss medium with the paint to achieve sufficient dilution. This should give a nice coloured transparency, which will allow you to create a gradient with a Spalter from blue to coral red.

ADDING COLOUR
Brush the coral red on the mountains again to bring out the light. And finally, khaki green across the plain.
