STEP 1 — THE SKETCH
Draw your whole lemons and lemon slices, spacing them out across the page. Let some of the elements extend beyond the edges to create the impression that the pattern continues beyond the page.
STEP 2 — LEMON YELLOW
Prepare a Lemon Yellow diluted with water. Paint one side of each lemon, then finish with clean water to allow the colour to flow and blend naturally. Next, use a fine brush to paint the peel and segments of the lemon slices.
STEP 3 — SHADES AND LEAVES
Add touches of Yellow Ochre and Cadmium Yellow to your lemons, then use water to let the colours blend together. Mix yellow with Ultramarine Blue to paint the stems and first leaves.
STEP 4 — THE DETAILS
Add definition to the lemon slices with a few fine lines and a touch of ochre in the centre. Vary the colour of the leaves with Emerald Green, then add small ochre dots to recreate the texture of the lemon peel.
STEP 5 — BLUE STRIPES
Once the lemons are dry, make pencil marks at 1 cm intervals. Paint every other stripe blue, carefully working around the lemons and leaves.
STEP 6 — THE RESULT
And there you have it! You dared to paint! Admire your bright lemons and the beautiful variations created with watercolour.
