Step 1/7 – Materials
You will need:
- A sheet of thick paper or canvas
- Linel gouache paint (Matisse Set)
- A fine brush and a flat brush
- A palette
- A pencil
- A glass of wat
Step 2/7 – Drawing the shapes
Using a pencil, lightly sketch the various leaves inspired by Matisse’s world across the entire surface.

Step 3/7 – Painting the first leaves
Choose a bright colour (here, an orange-yellow) and paint the first leaves in solid blocks, without trying to create any gradients.
Let the simplicity of the shapes shine through.
Step 4/7 – Add the new colours
Continue to fill your composition with a second colour (green, for example), arranging the elements harmoniously across the page.
Alternate the shapes to create a sense of rhythm
Step 5/7 – Complete the composition
Gradually paint the other leaves in different colours, ensuring the spaces are balanced.
The aim is to create a lively and colourful composition.
Step 6/7 – Add details
Include a few small complementary shapes to fill in the empty spaces and enhance the graphic effect.
